It seems my arcade stick skills are getting rusty. I used to play 2D fighters with an aptitude for meticulous motions and flawless timing, but since Street Fighter IV, the shift towards more lenient input recognition has made me complacent. It's not like I can't put together some decent combos, but when playing The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match, I'm reminded of a less forgiving time.
Still, what's the point of picking up a fighter which is eight years past its sell-by date? Well, just like barrelled whisky, KOF 2002 has aged very well. It's still sporting the classic four-button layout, but behind its streamlined exterior lies a technical fighting system which has been fine-tuned over many iterations.
Indeed, KOF 2002 ditched the selectable styles and Striker systems in favour of something more intuitive. You pick three fighters and then select an order in which to field them, and although you can't tag out, whoever goes last can stock the most Super Deadly Moves.
In order to rescue fighters trapped in Orochi's dimensional prison, these heroes have been given the ability to fly through the skies by Chizuru Kagura and use their abilities to shoot down various demons and wraiths.
Being the twelfth installment of The King of Fighters series, there was a lot to expect from this game. With this, the game did meet certain expectations, but definitely not all. It was a runner-up of the Best Fighting Game at the 2009 E3 Awards, losing to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. However, the game was still lacking in development and content. The developers tried to update the game frequently. Unfortunately, the console edition was still plagued with uncontrollable lag when attempting to play online multiplayer. This made it hard for players to put their skills up to the test against other players worldwide.
The combination of online lag and a lack of content made the game very limited in options. For the most part, players could only play either single-player or local multiplayer with a friend. This may cause people to stray away from this installment. Overall, when playing single-player or multiplayer, the game provides great fun and entertainment. However, if you are looking for more content, then other fighting games, such as Marvel vs Capcom and Street Fighter, are better options.
Acclaimed by critics and gamers around the world, KOF 2002 UM is considered the most successful episode in the famous SNK franchise! Based on the KOF NESTS compilation, originally released in Japan, the game offers the series' largest selection of characters with its 66 fighters, as well as an all new soundtrack and improved graphics. 2b1af7f3a8
