It was the animals' own fault that the men had won, but they were determined to fight to the very last. The few who were able to stand and walk, set off in search of Napoleon. He then went to the big barn, which was still brightly lit up. Here he sat down in a corner and dozed away a heavy, troubled sleep. He was too tired to eat and too weary to move. He felt sorry for Squealer, who was lying at the foot of the Seven Commandments. He could understand him wanting to sleep.
At the first flash of dawn the people hurried to the scene of the battle. The animals were lying dead or dying on the ground in all directions. The few survivors were hardly able to stand, much less to help the others. They had not eaten for hours, and were famished and exhausted. The miller and his men had fled. The animals did not even know what had happened to Napoleon. The two pigs had been lost sight of in the black night, and could not be found. One of the sheep, a big, strong one, was lying on her side near the big wooden drain-pipe from which the water drained into the river. She had not moved since she was hit in the head, and looked as if she had been killed long before. She had lost an eye and a couple of her teeth, and her throat was gaping open. The geese had both died from a single blow from one of the men's sticks. The white paint that was still lying on the ground was dry, and the brush and brush-handle, which had been cut off by the blow, were lying beside it. The pots of white paint, which had been carried by one of the men, were lying broken and scattered on the ground.
