It will ask for a passphrase and a file name. Enter none for the passphrase, and id_rsa for the file name. Now we have a private and public key file, but we still have to upload them somewhere on our system.
To ensure that the public key is properly signed, you will want to run ssh-keygen with the -C option, which forces ssh-keygen to put the public key directly into the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub file. If you skip this step, then ssh-keygen will instead create a file named ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub and will put the public key into this file instead of the ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub file.
This will create the file ~/.ssh/id_rsa and the associated ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub file, which will be the public key and the file which you will submit to GitHub. Note that ssh-keygen will not prompt for a password. Instead it will generate a random key and then use the existing ~/.ssh/id_rsa file to store the key in.
The next thing we’ll need to do is add the public key to our remote hosts so that we can login without a password. First, we need the public key that’s generated by ssh-keygen:
cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub | ssh-keygen -t dsa
This will generate the proper key with the DSA scheme. If you ever do plan to use this key for another server, you’ll need to copy and paste the contents of the file to that server.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
