The expansion to this grand scale campaign is the Endless Space 2, a large galaxy which lends itself to different play styles and I'm lucky to be able to try it out over the coming weeks. Endless Space was a little hit and miss for me, going from one style of play to the next without much happening in between. RTS games make design decisions that are either 'Is this cool or is it bad' but Endless Space's flow between styles was frustratingly inconsistent. Endless Space 2 is different. It's a strategy game at its heart. It's a huge game at its core, with a huge scope that can fit into a smaller living room. There are no encounters. There are no timer ticks. There are no costs. All of these things are reserved for Endless Space 2's star system, which makes it something that doesn't necessarily need to be played in a customisable galaxy, and which makes it something that works well in a smaller space. It's a big galaxy, but it's not big, it's actually quite small and manageable.
The focus on strategy also means there's less of an emphasis on out-of-this-world visuals and the most recent title was arguably the last truly gorgeous strategy game on the PC. It's not that the game itself has strayed too far from a strategy focus - it's more that the scope of the galaxy is a little narrower, and because you can't roam about and discover things, you need to organise your exploration a little better. There's a little bit of Asteroids in there, but I played this a bit more like an infinite strategy game, just with galaxies. The basic idea is that you get a small fleet and you have to travel a large galaxy to find and colonise new planets. There's little to stop you colonising the whole galaxy in one fell swoop, but it's a matter of strategy. Don't settle on the first planet you find and you won't get the rare resources or giant star that makes your economy tick. You need to look at the whole galaxy, and think about how you want to get those resources.
The Mass Effect series has often been criticised for its lack of diversity. After all, the characters are all the same, don't really show many signs of racial diversity, and find themselves in a particular situation - the same one, time and time again. But Mass Effect 2, with its expanded cast, takes these things to a new level. There are no 'levels' in the classic sense of the word. As such, there is no principal and antagonist. In this, the game is a lot more similar to Star Trek and Babylon 5 than it is to the other space operas out there. There's not a single situation where you follow the protagonist to a new conflict. The difference is that instead of giving you a big plot to follow, it gives you lots of plots and lots of people you can follow. And that's what makes Mass Effect 2 such a good game, both for new players and for veterans. The level structure is smaller, but it's there. And with more than two player, it really becomes a massive communal experience. It's hugely satisfying to make decisions that affect others and see how they respond. 827ec27edc
